Hotels can take a big share of a Japan travel budget. This guide covers three places to stay in Osaka: a traditional ryokan and a basic hotel in Minami (the south), and a Western-style hotel in Kita (the north). Hotel rates change with the date, the room and the season, so we do not quote nightly prices here. Instead, we explain what each place offers and how to compare the real total.

Osaka Neighborhoods: Minami and Kita
Location matters more than almost anything else when you pick a hotel. Osaka has two main hubs.
Minami / Namba
Minami means "south." It is the area around Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, and it is where many visitors spend their evenings. Dotonbori is known for its lit-up riverside walk and its restaurants. If you like anime and games, Den Den Town is also nearby.
Kita / Umeda
Kita means "north." It is Osaka's other main hub and a busy business district with many train lines running through it, including JR Osaka Station. For shopping, see our guide to shopping in Umeda.
Cheap Osaka Hotel #1: A Ryokan Near Dotonbori
Yamatoya Honten is a ryokan, a Japanese-style inn, in Minami at 2-17-4 Shimanouchi, Chuo-ku. It is about a 3-minute walk from Nipponbashi Station, and the route from the station crosses the Dotonbori River. The hotel's page lists Namba Station as about a 13-minute walk.
Rooms are Japanese-style. According to the hotel, the standard room has its own bath and toilet. The most affordable room type has a toilet but no bathing facilities, so you use the communal bath. There are also family rooms and a small number of higher-floor rooms with a view of the Dotonbori River.
Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 10:00. You can book with or without meals. Breakfast is Japanese or Western style. Dinner is a kaiseki meal, which is a multi-course Japanese dinner. If you skip dinner, you can eat in Dotonbori instead.
If you have tattoos, ask the ryokan before you book. Many public baths in Japan have their own rules on tattoos, and Yamatoya's English site does not state its policy. You can contact the hotel at info@yamatoyahonten.co.jp.
For current rates, use the official booking page. The hotel's English site also lists an early-booking discount for reservations made 40 days ahead, which is paid in advance and non-refundable.
Cheap Osaka Hotel #2: A Basic Hotel in Dotonbori
Dotonbori Hotel is at 2-3-25 Dotonbori, Chuo-ku, about a 3-minute walk from Namba Station on the Midosuji Line. It is a regular hotel, so you get a private room with a private bath instead of a shared one.
Rooms range from singles to triples. The singles and semi-doubles are 13 square meters, and the twins and triples are 15 to 18 square meters. That is compact, so do not expect a large room.
The hotel lists several free extras:
- Wi-Fi throughout the building
- Free ramen in the lobby from 20:00 to 21:00
- Massage chairs in the lobby
- Luggage storage before check-in and after check-out
- Coffee and tea in the lobby, and complimentary water on three floors
- Washers and dryers on two floors (the detergent is free, and washing and drying are paid)
Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out is at 11:00. If you book through the hotel's official website, you can extend check-out to 12:00 at no charge. Breakfast (continental and Japanese) is served from 7:00 to 9:30 and costs ¥1,800 for adults when paid on the day, according to the hotel.
The hotel's news page mentions construction on a neighboring site scheduled until the end of 2026, with work during the day. If you are sensitive to noise, check the latest notice before you book.

Cheap Osaka Hotel #3: A Western-Style Hotel in Kita
Hearton Hotel Kita Umeda is at 3-12-10 Toyosaki, Kita-ku. Its official access page gives these walking times:
- About 2 minutes from Nakatsu Station on the Midosuji Line
- About 7 minutes from Hankyu Umeda Station (Chayamachi exit)
- About 10 minutes from Osaka Metro Umeda Station
- About 15 minutes from JR Osaka Station on foot
The hotel's page says Wi-Fi covers the whole building. Check which Nakatsu Station exit is open, because the hotel's pages mention construction at one of the exits.
Important: the hotel's official page currently shows a notice of a full closure for electrical equipment renovation, with the date 22 February 2027, as well as a notice about exterior wall repairs. The page does not say how long the closure lasts. Check the hotel's site for the latest dates before you book, and look at the room options, check-in and check-out times and rates there.
What Is the Cheapest Way to Stay in Osaka?
Look for room types that cut out what you do not need. At Yamatoya Honten, the hotel itself describes the room without a private bath as its most affordable option, and you can book without meals. Not every hotel has a cheaper shared-bath option, so check each room type.

Finally, compare the total price for your own dates, because rates vary by date and season.
Osaka Accommodation Tax
Osaka Prefecture charges an accommodation tax per person, per night. Under the rates that apply from 1 September 2025, there is no tax on a nightly rate under ¥5,000 per person, and the tax is ¥200 for a nightly rate of ¥5,000 to under ¥15,000, ¥400 for ¥15,000 to under ¥20,000, and ¥500 for ¥20,000 and above. Other Things to Consider
Prices change with the season and with big events. Spring, with its cherry blossoms, is a popular time to visit, so book early and compare the total including tax for your dates. Also check a map before you book, so your hotel is close to the station or the area you want.
In Conclusion
A cheap stay in Osaka does not have to be a bad one. A ryokan by the Dotonbori River, a plain hotel a short walk from Namba Station, or a hotel in Kita each suit a different trip. Check each hotel's official site for current rates, hours and notices before you book.
