What is Pottery?

Pottery is a traditional craft that uses natural materials such as clay and stone to create practical items like plates, pots, and vases, as well as works of art. By shaping raw clay and firing it at high temperatures in a kiln, strong and beautiful pieces are produced. Across Japan, various types of pottery that utilize the unique characteristics of each region have been passed down through generations. Pottery and ceramics is a profound world that combines practicality and artistry, and it has been cherished as one of Japan's traditional cultures since ancient times. In Japanese, pottery is referred to as ‘togei’, which means ‘the craft of ceramics’.

The History of Pottery in Japan

The history of pottery in Japan can be traced back to the Jomon period (13000 BC to 300 BC). Subsequently, techniques were transmitted from China and the Korean Peninsula, leading to the development of unique pottery cultures in various regions. Particularly famous are Seto and Mino ware, Imari ware, Kutani ware, and Kyoto and Kiyomizu ware, all named after the regions they originated in. In these production areas, traditional techniques are still passed down, and craftsmen strive for improvement daily.

The Art of Japanese Pottery

Pottery in Japan has a long-standing history and a rich tradition in the arts. The simple yet refined beauty of Japanese ceramics is highly esteemed worldwide. The characteristic feature of Japanese pottery lies in expressing the beauty of nature. The intricate paintings on pottery often depict scenes of changing seasons, wildlife, and natural elements, showcasing the rustic beauty of the clay. Additionally, many practical utensils used in daily life, such as tea bowls and vases for flower arrangements in the tea ceremony, are also crafted.
